NOTE FROM THE ARTIST:

I grew up among the ranchers of the Wild West. My grandfather is 98 years old, a cowboy who spent time as a professional bull rider in the rodeo circuit. When he goes to church, he still wears a cowboy hat.

The cowboy hat is a symbol of fascination for me, this object of function and fashion that never leaves a farmer’s side. I’m particularly interested in the “nice” cowboy hat that every true farmer owns; the one that comes out on Sundays and at funerals. Such a functional item turned into pure fashion, pure symbol, pure identity.

To translate this fascination, I looked to Van Gogh’s Portrait of the Postman; Joseph Roulin. To me, this piece is an exaltation of a humble profession in paint. One with its own unique hat of function, fashion, and identity.

In my work, I strive to capture the same grace, dignity, and weightiness that Van Gogh communicated to us. Clear lines and saturated colors provide a grounded foundation, but I pray the symbol of the “Nice Hat” communicates divinity.
